The Enneagram is a powerful and dynamic personality system that describes nine distinct and fundamentally different patterns of thinking, feeling, and acting. In comparison to other personality tests, the Enneagram looks at the self from a more holistic point of view, and with a higher focus on nurture vs. nature.
The Challenge
The complexities of the Enneagram system, outdated digital resources, and lack of a cohesive visual identity can make it feel unapproachable and difficult to understand. This is especially the case for younger generations who have less patience for online learning that lacks visuals, interaction, and easily comprehensible information. For this reason, I chose to create a visual system and digital platform for the Enneagram, that frames it as an engaging, approachable, and understandable tool for anyone trying to build self-awareness and improvement.
The Visual System
The Enneagram consists of 3 Centers of Intelligence with 3 types per center. Each of these 9 types then has a wing, which will be the type that is directly to the left or the right. There are also three different subtype variations for each type. Subtypes are the expression of the three basic instincts influenced by your type. Together, this makes for 64 possible type variations.
With all these layers to the Enneagram, I needed to create symbols that built upon each other, and visualized the depth of the system. Each of the 9 types has a designated gradient. The symbol for each type is represented by a circle in the type’s color encompassing the point on the Enneagram diagram where that type exists. It is meant to be objective, giving the type an identity without assuming too much about who that type is.
The symbols for each type are created to be like building blocks, where you can add the layers of your wing and your subtype to create a more unique symbol for yourself. The wings are represented by half circles above or below the circle depending on the location of the wing type, and the subtypes are represented by geometric shapes that can be layered on top and are symbolic of the meaning of the subtypes.
The Website - Systems
The site is designed to serve as the starting point for millennials in learning about the system, discovering their type, and beginning their journey of growth through the Enneagram. It is divided into three different sections: The System, The Test, and The Types.
The first section of the site is The Systems page. This page begins with an an interactive Enneagram diagram where the user can explore the symbol, the centers, the types, the wings, and the arrow points. It then explores the benefits of the Enneagram, the meaning of subtypes, a timeline of its history, and another interactive diagram to learn about how the 64 variations.
The Website - Test
The second section of the site is The Test. This test uses the paragraph method to lead users through a series of three steps that will help them in discovering their type. In the first step, you read through type statements for each type and choose the three you most resonate with. In the second step, you take a deeper look into your top three types, and the key differences between them, to determine which one you most strongly connect to.
The Website - Types
The third section of the site is The Types. The Types gives in depth information about each type. The final step of The Test leads to The Types section. The information in this section is divided into Understand Yourself and Transform Yourself.
The Understand Youreslf section gives the user insights about the behavior of their type. This includes their center of intelligence, core fears, desires and motivations, stengths and challenges, wing and subtype, how they are in realtionships, stress and security points, health levels, and finally the meaning behind their chosen color.
The Transform Yourself section gives the user an opportunity to use these new insights about themselves to grow and transform. This includes long term goals, reflection questions, daily rituals, statementes to remind themselves, and external resources for more information.
The Color Rationale
Each type has its own designated color system. These colors were decided based on significant color psychology research and deep dive into the core of each type. Explore the connections between each color and its type.
